Glass Alternatives for Window Security
Why consider glass alternatives for your windows? We all enjoy the benefits of having natural light coming in and a view from our windows but, windows can also be a big security risk. We often times leave them wide open or unlocked. Even when they are closed and latched, windows not only allow burglars to look in but can easily be shattered with any heavy object allowing entry into your home. There are several types of glass alternatives available today that can help secure your windows. Following is a list of some safe and secure glass replacement options.
Wire Glass Wire glass has wire mesh in it making it strong enough to withstand extreme force. Some people do not like this option because wire shows and you may not like wire in your windows. However, you may consider using wired glass for less visible or basement windows. Wired glass is less expensive compared to other window alternatives. Laminated Glass Laminated glass is two layers of glass with an extra film or vinyl layer that is sandwiched between the panes. The vinyl bonds with the glass and makes it almost impossible to break through. It is also clear allowing the window to look completely normal and transparent. You won't even know it's laminated until someone tries to break it. Laminated glass is more expensive and very thick. It requires special installation, so you'll most likely need to have it professionally installed. Tempered Glass Tempered glass is made by basically bringing glass to a melting point, and then freezing it back to become solid again. This makes it several times stronger than ordinary glass and harder for burglars to break, but it is still breakable. Tempered glass will shatter into small pebbles when broken so it is also considered as safety glass. Plexiglass or Polycarbonate These types of windows are not made from glass. They looks like the real thing, but are actually made out of a thick synthetic materials. They are transparent and look like a regular window, but very hard to break. Polycarbonate is stronger than plexiglass and costs twice as much. Both of these cost less than other glass alternatives but are easily scratched and will yellow in time.
