Pet Friendly Security Alarms

Pet Friendly Security Alarm

Are there such things as pet friendly security alarms? Is it possible to have a motion activated security alarm and pets at the same time? Good questions!

Pets play an important role in many of our lives. Research shows that pets help us feel better overall and help us to deal with stress and loneliness. However, they have been known to cause trouble for some motion activated security alarms and security systems.

You may be thinking you might have to give up your cherished pet if you're going to have a security alarm system in your home. Fortunately the number of people who keep pets keeps increasing every year forcing the home security industry to address this issue.

There is still room for improvement but, the latest technologies have made many improvements to pet friendly securty alarms, making it much more feasible to keep your pets while keeping your home safe. Several DIY alarm systems and most of the top security companies such as Broadview (formerly Brinks) and ADT now use the passive infrared (PIR) sensors for motion detecting.

PIR Passive Infrared Sensors

A passive infrared motion detector detects temperature change or infrared source changes. In other words it senses when someone is in a room by sensing body heat or motion in the area that it's projection covers and this will set off the alarm. PIR sensors have to be adjusted to work in a pet-friendly home. They will need to be focused at a level higher than the largest pet. This way it will still detect human movement at a higher lever, while animals freely roam the house.
