Following are some home security tips to help you be aware of what burglars look for. Most burglars are opportunists looking for mistakes and know the signs of a vulnerable house when they see one.

• Think Like a Burglar - One of the most important things you can do to improve your home security is to take some time to walk around your property and think like a burglar. • Home Security Lighting - Walk around the outside of your property in the day and after dark. Look for dark spots where a burglar could work on a window or door without being seen. All exterior areas of your property should be well lit with vandal resistant lighting.

Install a home security system. There is a wide variety of home security systems on the market that you can use against home invasion or burglary.

• Alarm Signs & Stickers - Post a sign or sticker that states your property is protected by an alarm. Some people place stickers and signs on their property even if they don't have a system in place. Most burglars will look for an easy target and when they see that there may be an alarm or security system in place and they will go on to another house.

• Trees, Shrubs and Ladders - As you walk around your property look for trees and shrubs that could provide concealment for thieves. Keep any trees and shrubs trimmed away from windows and doors so that these areas are visible from the street. Also keep trees trimmed away from upper floor windows. Plant vines and plants with thorns around your home and below windows. You'll want make breaking in as difficult as possible. Holly, roses and cactus are a few examples of spiny or thorny plants. Keep ladders stored in a garage or secure area. A ladder left out is an invitation for a thief to gain entry to upper floors.

There are DIY systems or you can hire someone to add to your already existing security system. Most security companies have lots of ideas and home security tips for door safety.

• Mailboxes & Newspapers - Before you go on vacation ask a neighbor or friend stop by and pick up your newspaper and remove your mail from your box while you are away. A overflowing mailbox lets everyone know you are not home. Post offices will also hold your mail while you are away from home for a long period of time. Newspapers will generally suspend delivery for a period of time.

• Keep valuables away from windows Make sure they can not be seen from outside. Walk around outside and look from all different directions to see if any are visible. Remember that removing opportunity is always easier than removing a thief.
