Planning a Security Budget

Everyone's security budget is different depending on whether you live in an apartment, a house, in a small town or in the city. Having the best security system for your specific needs is something that everyone desires. Not everyone, however, has exactly the same budget or security needs. We can help you determine:

•What your security budget is
•Just how much security system you need
•What your security options are

What is your budget?

The first thing to ask yourself, of course, is how much money can you afford to invest in security? Consider up front costs such as installation (if you choose not to do it yourself) equipment (such as alarms, components, cameras, etc.) and home improvements costs (such as new doors, locks, windows etc). Some long term charges to keep in mind would be ongoing charges such as maintenance fees and monitoring fees (if you choose to have your alarm monitored) Monitored vs unmonitored alarms.

Security Priorities

Secondly, you'll need to ask yourself what is most important to you in the way of home security. Make a list of the areas you would like to secure, such as your house or an apartment, garage or pool, etc.. Include in the list all of the points of entry that need to be covered, such as windows, doors, gates, etc. Once you've identified your primary home security goals you can then identify the components you'll need to secure your home in the way that's best for you, your family, and your situation.

Security Components

Take a look at all of the different components available today. Complete list of components available.

A security system is included in these components but, not everyone needs a full blown security alarm system. There are lots of small components that can be used by themselves and in some cases may be all you need to improve your security. For instance, you could place a motion sensor by your front door that turns the lights on or triggers a number of other responses, such as motion activated cameras or an alarm sounding when someone is outside. More on motion sensing components.

Security Systems

As you start to compare security systems within your security budget, you will find that the prices for a complete system range anywhere from $199.00 to thousands. Prices depend on how many doors, windows and areas you need covered, whether you install it yourself or have it professionally installed and whether or not you would like to have it monitored. They can be purchased and installed by the most reputable companies like ADT or Protect America. You can also purchase complete systems and components at home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowes and online which you install yourself. DIY Alarm Installation. Keep in mind that the price of some systems will not include installation costs or rental fees if applicable. If you need a telephone line for the system you'll need to factor in the cost of that as well. To help you assess your security budget we have put together a guide that will assist you in researching the top security companies and choosing the best company that fits your needs.
